Server Maintenance Log
  • It has come to my attention that some people are interested in hearing about what is going on when we're doing "server maintenance". So I'll update this forum thread to record what we're doing when we do that.

Yesterday, on September 19th, our maintenance time was for the migration of replay data from our database to Amazon S3. Due to the large nature of the replay data, putting it into our MySQL database as just another column proved to be a bad decision. Our database backups were already getting to be over a gigabyte of space, which is far too much for the (relatively) small amount of players, and would soon outpace how much storage we could reasonably use on our servers. Now our backups are measured in tens of megabytes instead.

Today, on September 20th, the downtime was also for that. Yesterday's downtime only copied the data and pushed the new code to use S3. Today's maintenance removed the (now stored elsewhere) replay data from the database, since it seems to be working just fine with S3.
  • On September 27th, we had a short downtime to push new code related to tracking In App Purchase data and a small bug related to the previous replay data move.
  • On October 1st, we had a short maintenance period to fix a problem where a lot of activity for syncs would take a long time. If you have a lot of matches in your list, you should notice syncs get a lot faster. When 1.0.4 is released to the App Store, it'll be even faster.
